 18/10/10 Estuary Update

 Estuary Water Quality Post-Quake:

ECAN have updated their website water quality information and maps in relation to recreational use in the southern half of the Estuary where we kite & windsurf. There is now a Yellow zone (south of a line from Sandy Point across to Plover Street) indicating normal water quality from two hours before to four hours after the time of high tide at Lyttelton. At lower tides the area is closed to recreational use.

They also warn that the entire Estuary is closed for recreational use during and up to 48 hours after rainfall because additional sewage contamination is possible due to leakage from broken sewer pipes and contamination of the stormwater system. This is a timely reminder to avoid the Estuary during and after rainfall events, which regularly flush the entire Christchurch catchment into our rivers and Estuary (yuk).

For the latest see ECAN's website here.

 04/10/10 Estuary Update

As for the estuary, the news on contamination from ECAN's water quality scientist and the Medical Officer of Health suggest the southern part of the estuary (i.e. the Humphreys Drive windsurf area) is back to normal levels (i.e. very poor - avoid swimming), with the cautionary statement below. The ban on water sports continues in the northern part of the estuary. Use your own discretion.

"Normal water quality conditions apply to the blue area of the estuary (south of a line from Sandy Point across to Plover Street) during the period between two hours before and four hours after the time of high tide at Lyttelton. During other tidal states there is increased risk to public health of contact with the water in the blue area."

Earthquake Media Update Canterbury District Health Board - 17.9.10

Rivers and coastal areas from the Waimak River (as far as and including the Banks Peninsula, the Avon River, the Heathcote River, the Estuary and the water off all local beaches) remain contaminated with sewage and wastewater overflows following the Saturday 4 September earthquake. Canterbury's Medical Officers of Health have issued warnings that it is unsafe to gather fish or shellfish including whitebait.

The public are being advised

  • Not to drink water from rivers
  • Not to collect fish or shellfish from rivers, river mouths or the estuary. This includes whitebait.
  • Not to use rivers or the estuary for recreational use, including swimming or boating
  • To avoid physical contact with water in these waterways.

07/12/09 Results Update

Canterbury Champs results have been posted on the results page. Ross is sending the confirmed results for the GP series.  As the season standings seemed to penalise those that couldn't sail through no fault of their own and not reward those that sailed well, the table and structure has been revised. It seems to bring eveyone a lot closer, is a better representation of the fleet and still rewards those that sail regularly. Thanks for all the feedback :)

 02/12/09 Results Update

Official results from the weekend at NPCL and MPYC have been posted on results page. Still need to confirm GP series 1 and 2 results.

02/12/09 Canterbury Paper Tiger Championships Weekend PBBC Update

Hi all,

I was talking to Angela this morning, who will be picking up Bob from the airport around 10:30 am, and this is the reminder of December’s Pigeon Bay Christmas Regatta – this weekend

  • First Race is at 11 am, two days of sailing, WITH THE WEATHER FORECAST LOOKING GOOD, especially so after the weather we’ve had these past 5 days.
  • Some of us are booked in for accommodation with Angela and Bob at the house adjacent to the Club – contact Ange if you are interested in those accomm’s.  And they are using the house both Friday and Saturday nights.
  • Saturday night’s meal is being cooked by the PT wives at the Club - $12/person.  You can buy lunch at the club too, using the signup procedure.

And so things are looking up for a great weekend.  Glen McKenzie’s speed last weekend on Lyttelton Harbour is setting him up to keep John K from going to sleep at the front.  We’re all interested to see how Bob’s new rudders go (take spares Bob in case bad things happen)…. And if James has enough mainsheet to have some left over for a righting line!

Until then, Stay Dry –

John A

19/11/09 Canterbury Paper Tiger Championships Accommodation

Angela Nicholls (PA for Bob) has kindly booked Warren Harbridge’s place for Friday and Saturday nights.  For those who don’t know it, it is the house overlooking the club on the South side, just by the entrance.  Very handy and comfortable.

The cost is $15 a night.  First in first served, although there is room for quite a few.

Email Angela

Thanks
Paul
