Welcome to our website, and to PT sailing in Canterbury. Whether on the safe waters of the Estuary, the rolling/breezy Lyttelton, the regular easterly of Pigeon Bay, or the picturesque Akaroa Harbour, you will find an abundance or magical sailing locations. Canterbury boasts an active, enthusiastic fleet of PT sailors of every level from International reps to the new sailor. So, you will always find someone to sail with. We all like to travel around a variety of clubs ensuring our sailing is social, varied and competitive. If you would like to get into sailing a PT in Canterbury this is the place to find out where and how.

The Canterbury Paper Tiger Catamaran Fleet is an informal group of PT sailors located in and around Canterbury.  This website has been created to assist in fleet communication and encourage Paper Tiger sailing in Canterbury. A place to share information, stories and pictures. All official enquires and class information should be directed to the NZ Paper Tiger site and the International Paper Tiger Association. We also encourage all PT sailors to join the New Zealand Paper Tiger Owner Association (NZPTOA).

Paul Willyams is doing a lot of hard work with the MPYC PT fleet so be sure to check out their site in the Links, Brian Harvey is your man at PBBC which is a great location, and John Kennett is a regular at all fleet events and at NPCL so check out their site in the Links too. As MPYC and NPCL have different schedules check out both clubs and double your sailing time and fun!

About Paper Tigers

The Paper Tiger catamaran was designed by Ron Given of New Zealand in 1968 as a father and son trainer. However, due to its competitive potential was modified to a single handed racer for mid weight crews. It is widely sailed in New Zealand and Australia, and has a following in South Africa.  Given, also designed a junior version the Tiger Cub and a larger version the Tiger Shark. But the Paper Tiger has stood the test of time as a fast catamaran with very tight racing, attracting top sailors.

Class rules allow hull construction from plywood, Kevlar, fibreglass or carbon fibre. The boat is suitable for home-built construction meaning the class is easy and cheap to enter and be competitive in.

Optimum sailing conditions are 5-25 knots. Optimum boat weight is 50-55kg including fittings and excluding rigging, rudders, rudder stocks and centreboards.
